Camp Daggett (2014)
Upon finishing the lacrosse season on a high note with the Detroit Country Day program and capturing the Division 2 State Championship, I quickly made my way north to the shores of Walloon Lake where Camp Daggett is located. During my time at Camp Daggett, I worked on the waterfront as a lifeguard, offered swim lessons, organized water-based team activities and oversaw the general safety of the children as they enjoyed the crisp depths of Walloon. When I was away from the waterfront, I ensured the well being of the young men in my cabin throughout the course of the day whenever they were not taking part in an organized clinic or activity.
The Transition Zone (2014)
Following an eight week stint with the traditional Daggett camp, I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to stay one more week and work with a group of young adults with varying degrees of visual impairment. This one week experience was without question more demanding, but the expectations that I needed to fulfill were drastically different than what I had grown accustom to during the previous eight weeks. Instead of interacting with upwards of ten to fifteen campers at any given time, my sole task during the Transition Zone was to pair up with a young man who was completely blind in both eyes. Even though he had never experienced the sensation of vision, this young man scaled every available obstacle at the high ropes course and continued to amaze me with his ability to perceive his surroundings and his steadfast desire to achieve his utmost potential left me awestruck on numerous occasions. It is safe to say that by the end of the week, this young man made a far greater impact on me than I could have ever imagined. He taught me what it truly means to live a fulfilling life, and whether this was intentional or not, I questioned my understanding of what it means to deal with adversity. Even though I was designated as the leader in the pair for the week, I would be remiss if I did not admit that we ultimately shared the role of 'counselor' for the week.
